“What on earth?” He looked around for the bike and saw two more umbrellas lying crumpled under the metal frame of a coat stand. Felix remembered what Rupus had said about making his treasured bike out of umbrellas and a coat stand.

The wishsnatcher had snatched another wish.

It was dawn by the time Felix finally arrived at Silver Way. He staggered as quickly as he could towards the railway bridge, cradling the heavy vanquisher, which now sported a large dent. A terrible headache pounded behind his bruised forehead, but Felix tried his best to stay focused. He’d been much slower on foot than he would have been on his bike. He only hoped he had made it in time.

The front door in the brick wall was ajar. Felix’s heart sank like a stone. He couldn’t imagine Rupus leaving the door open while there was a wishsnatcher about.

Felix looked despairingly into the dark cavity behind the door. Please be here, Rupus. Please be OK. He pointed the nozzle of the vanquisher into the hallway as he inched forward.

Snugwarm had never felt less snug. A sensation of dread repelled him. Felix longed to get away, but he couldn’t give up on his friend. He pressed onwards.

Something crunched below his feet. In the dim gloom, he could just about make out a broken mirror on the floor. Deep claw marks were scratched into the floorboards beside it. Felix shuddered.

“Rupus!” he shouted. “Rupus, it’s me, Felix! Are you here?”

There was no answer. The final drops of remaining hope drained away.
